The Doberman is classified as a working dog, and well-bred, well-socialized Dobes should be able to carry out a variety of duties to perform well in a number of different venues.
Our members are involved in many performance activities: obedience, rally, agility, tracking, freestyle dance, therapy work, and carting. Some of our dobes have been trained and certified to do therapy work in nursing homes and hospitals and are presently active. There are even Dobermans working as guide dogs for the blind.
Another sport, which has long been popular with Doberman owners is schutzhund--a three-tiered event consisting of obedience, tracking, and protection work. Schutzhund is a specialized, vigorous sport, and members of the PTSDPC can guide you to informative books and web sites.
The Doberman Pinscher Club of America, www.dpca.org, has designed the Working Aptitude Evaluation just for Dobermans to evaluate the nature, behavior and temperament of individual Dobes when confronted with a variety of sights, sounds, and challenges. NOTE: PTSDPC will be holding a W.A.E. on July 20, 2008. Contact us for registration form.
